Arrived in Singapore knackered, but looking forward to three swift days of exploration

We found a city full of really good things to eat and drink - though 'salted plum freeze' might not be everyone's thing

It's also a city graced with architectural achievements of all styles

And to dispel the squeaky-modern image, we watched a Hindu procession of startlingly pierced devotees

And in a still-wild spot on the north west edge of the island we got up close to smooth-coated otters

Singapore's modern architecture is original and often visually stunning

This one is locally called 'the durian' - perhaps in answer to London's 'gherkin'?

Hard to believe these old shophouses and the picturesque golden domed mosque are less than a kilometer away

Thaipusan - a truly eye-opening procession of Hindu devotion. Yes, those are climbing carabiners attaching him to the small wagon he's towing

This unusually young devotee is holding up a heavy head-piece (note the shoulder pads) but it's the stick through the tongue that I can't look away from

Dozens of slender spears criss-cross before piercing the skin

Different day, completely different activity - we're off to hunt for otters

Getting so close to smooth-coated otters for three hours is our best otter sighting ever, hands down

Hmm. Smells good, but how do you get the wrapper off? Tantalising terrapins!

These huge monitor lizards shared the same pond - thankfully they only fought each other, and were mostly scared of the otters

Of course, it's still worth keeping a watchful eye out, especially if your other half is so far asleep as to appear catatonic

We celebrated our otter sighting with a huge feast of black-pepper crab - if Maureen looks covetous, that's how delicious it was

Truth be told, we ate more posh food than street food in Singapore - I totally recommend this pear william and creme brule combo

Do not adjust your sets. This is a 'macha cappuccino' and was delicious. Macha is a green tea powder, much loved in Japan

Yep, Singapore was a delight to the eyes, tastebuds and nostrils - and to our favourite sense, the sense of wonder
